This concludes the test of the "Cyberspace Electronic Mail System" (CEMS).
Had this been a real emergency, we better make sure the phone is working.
Most problems are generally traced to "Problematic Message Syndrome" (PMS).
Should we continue to experience "Stymied Hepatitis Information Transmission"
(SHIT), perform the following...
As Soon As Possible, ( I can't think of any acronyms for this one), employ the
Hepatitis Electronic Liaison Program, (HELP), through the Deploy Email Backup,
(DEB) and we should be able to connect.
Houston...we have a problem, OBVIOUSLY I can't sleep!

Fwd: Friday was a great day for Del~this pertains to you too Kelly..thank you

2006-11-28 04:39:34

I send this to a select few..sorry that I dropped Dels condition on you all the
other day..hell I can't remember what day is what. Del called and left ME a v/m
at 9pm last night..he wanted to know what channel the race was on..G-D bless
him..I think he wanted to watch it for ME..I could be wrong..anyhow..as I
said..I'm heading to the hospital and plan to be there at 8am central..if he
calls the house FIRST he'll tell me not to come up..I have a listening problem
for sure..and no time for real people..I have my DOC's here..Dogs of
Choice.,..my moo..and Dels Kirby
Bayla <bgumins@...
From: Bayla <bgumins@...
Subject: Friday was a great day for Del~this pertains to you too Kelly..thank
you
To: Kelly Z <hepatitiscaware@...
Its late so I'll try and keep this short. hahahahahahahah
Del had the 'isolation' lifted so I was able to go into the room for a couple
hour visit. He had the 'no contact' restriction..meaning no touching..they are
still concerned although he CLEARED the staph infection I was not able to
'touch' him..shew....he's soooooo handsy..j/k.
Our visit was a good one. His spirits are high..although he is still somewhat
frustrated and Del..all knowing wanted his pain meds. Thankfully the doc has him
on Demerol every six hours..as opposed to Christmas when he was getting morphine
every four hours..this time when he's released he won't go threw the dt's like
he did in January.
He's eating very good and not complaining too much. He is very alert and aware
of whats going on with him. ME not knowing about ESLD (end stage liver disease)
and talking to Del a lot I wonder if maybe he isn't as bad off as we thought. I
mean he can give me directions to the detail how to get somewhere. Very detailed
man..very smart man..although sometimes forgetful who isn't?
We joked today that with my brain and his brain that equals 1/2 of a full
brain..we just need one person w/o hep to contribute 1/2 their brain cells..and
TADA than both of us would be better off.
He had COBRA issues..as in he forgot to pay his insurance. Well thanking the
higher power whom ever that may be his insurance WAS re-instated today. Not only
did he miss one payment he missed three..so for me that tells me there is a
higher power. Not getting religious here but me talking to people in the know
about COBRA they wait for you to make a mistake. Del made that mistake three
months in a row (thank you hep c).
I have come in contact with his nurses aid..her dad is in ESLD..the lady the
runs the condo maintenance fees association..her uncle is in ESLD. I handed the
security guard at the hospital today one of Kelly Z's cards..he has been clear
of the virus for two years now. I stopped at a red cross blood bank
trailer..just for the photo op in Florida..we chatted..he husband died after
getting a TP..the hep c over took the new liver before he ever left the
hospital. He lost his life.
I find it just amazing how many people when you come right out and talk to
them just how many are in the know and either have it, had it, or know someone
with it.
It takes a lot of people like myself, Pam and all of Kelly Z's street people
to keep spreading the word to get tested.
Kelly Z..hepcaware.org << check out the website..pass it along to your friends
and their friends and on and on.
Hopefully Del will be well enough to make the trip on the 18th when Kelly will
be playing in Austin. If not..well then it just wasn't the right time for her
and I to meet.
Please do this for all the people..all of those 2 out of 3 people that don't
know they have hepatitis C..help them learn to understand this disease and get
tested.
e-mail Kelly and ask for postcards..they are FREE..pass them out..save one
life..that one life you save could in turn save 50 more.
pay it forward and forward and forward.
I'm off my soap box..and yes I'm more rested than I've been in two weeks.
I spoke with Pam tonight who is headed home to Tally after yet another TOGA
party at Kyms..although w/o me no doubt it was NO fun..truthfully..Pam over did
it...shhhhhh....she way over did it. I don't want to be like Pam and over do it
therefore I cannot answer my phone or private e-mails.
For those of you that have left me messages on my cell phone, YES it is on
silent or off..I AM NOT ON VACATION MS. LAKE TAHOE..was your Angel flight a
vacation? consider what I am doing in Texas what you did in Lake Tahoe only I
don't leave the doors open. INSIDE joke kids..my g/f in Lake Tahoe is a pilot
..can you believe that the door of her plane was open? lol..that was why her
passenger was so cold at who knows how high she was flying..accidents happen
Ms.Tahoe..I can't return your call. I love you dearly but what I did for you
and got paid for I am now doing for free. I am spending my daughters
inheritance.
nite guys..thanks for your prayers. Del will hopefully be home by Monday at
the latest.
~Bayla~

Amantadine triple therapy for non-responder hepatitis C patients. Clues for controversies (ANRS HC 03 BITRI).

2006-11-22 22:09:08

Amantadine triple therapy for non-responder hepatitis C patients. Clues for
controversies (ANRS HC 03 BITRI).
Maynard M, Pradat P, Bailly F, Rozier F, Nemoz C, Ahmed SN, Adeleine P, Trepo C,
A French Multicenter Group A.
Department of Hepato-gastroenterology, Hotel-Dieu, 1 place de l'Hopital, 69288
Lyon Cedex 02, France.
BACKGROUND/AIMS: To determine if addition of amantadine to pegylated
interferon/ribavirin improved response rates among chronic hepatitis C patients,
non-responders to interferon/ribavirin and study the dynamic of response.
METHODS: In a double blind, multicenter, randomized trial, 200 non-responder
patients received pegylated interferon 1.5mug/kg per week and ribavirin
800-1200mg/day, plus either amantadine 200mg/day or placebo for 48 weeks.
Endpoints were virological responses, ALT normalization, and histological
benefit overtime. RESULTS: Twenty percent of all patients achieved a sustained
virological response (SVR). This rate was 8% higher in the triple therapy group
(24%) compared with the double therapy group (16%) (P=0.22). A better
virological response rate at week 24 was observed in the triple regimen group
(43 vs 29%; P=0.06), which was lost at week 48 suggesting viral escape. The
biochemical response rate was also significantly higher with triple therapy at
week 12 (63 vs 49%; P=0.05) and week 24 (64 vs 49%; P=0.03). Fibrosis stabilized
or improved in 77% of all patients. CONCLUSIONS: Re-treatment of
interferon/ribavirin non-responder patients should be encouraged since a
substantial proportion benefits from re-treatment with pegylated
interferon/ribavirin +/- amantadine. In triple therapy involving amantadine, a
time wise response and an increased SVR rate in subgroups less prone to viral
breakthrough suggest clues for existing controversies.

Lisa, about the trolls

2006-11-22 08:07:30

If you like the area near Sedona, try Cottonwood, or Camp Verde. Globe is an old
mining town and some parts are very depressed, but the surrounding mountains are
pretty. Superior, which is closer to Phoenix than Globe, is very depressed
economically at the moment and probably has some very cheap places
comparatively. The Globe-Superior area is east of Phoenix in the Superstition
Mts, whereas Sedona-Cottonwood-Verde Valley area is north below the Mogollon
Rim. The Globe-Superior area, particularly Superior would be much more
commutable to Phoenix but would still be a very long drive every day. They bear
little resemblence to one another other than they are in Arizona.

Viral Load info after treatment

2006-11-22 04:50:40

I've been having a conversation with someone about viral load testing. I am four
months post tx..I will wait until month six. I was going tomorrow to have it
done. Then I got this magazine delivered (forgot I ordered it) and I read this
article I attached below along with the link.
My point is you should always CHECK for the facts yourself and not just
believe what anyone says without backing it up yourself. My friends intentions
were good. My doctor was right.
Patients who are undetectable for HCV-RNA at the end of treatment are labeled
end of treatment responders (EOT). If they are HCV-RNA neg six months following
their last interferon infection, they are labeled sustained viral responders
(SVR). Patients with a sustained viral response have about a 99 percent chance
of cure. Cure means that they are HCV-RNA negative one, two, five, ten, years after
completion of treatment. Patients cured of hepatitis C have a much better
survival rate than those whoa are not cured.

Arizona

I wouldn't doubt the drugs in Globe-Miami area with the economic depression.
That is Apache territory. The San Carlos reservation is just east of town. The
White Mountain Apache res is northeast. I used to run the ambulance service for
them for several years. Tucson was always my favorite larger city out there. If
you go south of there, the Bisbee area has an interesting alternative community
with lots of artists and musicians, or at least it did in years past. It's also
a little higher elevation, but once again anywhere in Arizona now there are lots
of drugs. Good luck on your move. Mike

Question from Gary

2006-11-20 23:21:41

Hi folks
I'm double posting some of these letters to get more input
I don't know if this is new or not it just say's in my lastletter
that I'll be taking Interferon/ribavarin. Now the big blue box they
gave me say's Pegassist and made by Roche. It look like a survival
kit
for heppers inside. Actualy it's been scaring me to look at it. But
the Doc said he wont't give it to me without a complete eye check up?
If I loose my eye sight I've lost my trade and I'm never goin to be
an Astronaut snkkkrrr.
Now also they said my RNA had dropped from 19k to 18k per ML. Now my
liver is on the rebound from Hemochromatosis, I was pronounced cured
after the Nov. 3rd Byopsie(9rs in treatment) and thats when they said
I have a Hep-C bug.It was over 19k at that time now it's falling?
Ok I'm keeping something back.....The Hemo'attacks the bodies organs
and loads them down with iron and they die. Eventualy the blood get's
so thick you can die of a heart failure. In others the lower
extremeties turn orange and organs start to fail and you die! In any
case you die! Thus they nicknamed this at one time Bronze Diabeates!
So
I'm so cured. Now that my testosterone level is twice it's normal
level!
I guess you might know by this that my first organ to shut down was
my
testicals. Yepper Ol Gary was no fun in bed! So I took shots twice a
week to get the lil guy up and runnin again! But now I have no need
for them and I'm supposed to reduce the Depotestoterone down to 0
over
the next few months.
Ok last question and I'm going to work,Has anyone heard of Hep going
away by proper diet or without treatment? Since mine is so low the
Doc
said I could wait a year or more to start after the last test.
Gary

HepCAware.org Presents "Silence is Deadly - Living with Hepatitis C"
Friday February 17 5:30pm and 10pm Channel 36
West Hollywoods Public Access Station on Adelphia Cable
Silence is Deadly - Living with Hepatitis C is a documentary chronicling the
lives of four people and their struggle with Hepatitis, a potentially fatal
liver disease. While exploring the nature of the virus, its treatments,
prognosis, and global impact, this powerful documentary further explores what it
is to live with a debilitating chronic illness and its stigma, as seen through
the eyes of our characters, one being the filmmaker herself.
The film was written, directed and produced by Kindra Anne Ruocco and In Your
Face Productions, with the purpose of ending the silence that has become an
epidemic for the estimated more than 5 million Americans who will contract
Hepatitis C in the next few years.
Currently about one in 15 people are living with this disease. "Silence is
Deadly" delves into the options and realities of Western and Eastern medicine,
and intertwines intimate details from a few who have made definitive lifestyle
choices in coping with their illness. Within the words and images, there exists
a powerful force for change and awareness with an underlying belief that
education equals prevention.
Kelly Zirbes from HepCAware.org is helping to promote the film and use it as a
tool for raising awareness of hepatitis C. If you have any questions please feel

Re: [HepCingles2] Question from Gary

2006-11-20 03:41:55

Hi Gary..
Did it come with a collapsable ice chest type deal?
I got the same thing.. I read the info and it has been in a closet eversince.
It's like a field pack. Read it.
Personally, I kind of thought it was overkill (plus I never even looked at it
again).
If someone has to take 2 a day shots it could come into good use.. but I was
just once a week.
An eye test was required for the TX. Look at your information or ask your
doctor.
It can cause damage to vision and in some cases blindness. Don't mean to cause
stress, but that's what they told me. An eye test is what...$40.00?
Priceless.....
I had to go to a class to learn more about doing it right, etc...
This is good that your asking questions and not just acting "blindly" (no
pun). I'm tryin' to stop but it's not easy..hehe.
Personally... it would be a toss up for me to do tx or not.
I don't know, maybe someone else does, if your VL is low, maybe diet and
exercise and herbs may allow you to avoid the sides that come along with tx, and
from what I understand may be permanent sometimes.
On the other hand, bite a stick and take the tx, because it may work better on
you with your VL than someone with a higher count.
Good Luck,
Del
y Hunter <gshunter2@...

I've been having a conversation with someone about viral load testing. I am
four months post tx..I will wait until month six. I was going tomorrow to have
it done. Then I got this magazine delivered (forgot I ordered it) and I read
this article I attached below along with the link.

Things to do when your retired

2006-11-19 15:47:59

What to do when you are RETIRED:
Something to look forward to in my old age:
Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their
days
interesting. Well for example, the other day I went into town and went
into
a shop.
I was only in there for about 5 minutes. When I came out there was a
cop
writing out a parking ticket. I went up to him and said, "Come on son,
how
about giving a senior a
break?" He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. I called him a
Nazi.
He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn
tires.,so
I called him a piece of dog shit He finished the second ticket and put
it on
the windshield with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket.
This
went on for about 20 minutes. The more I abused him, the more tickets
he
wrote.
Personally, I didn't give a shit. I came into town by bus. I try to
have a
little fun each day now that I'm retired. It's important at my age.

Sirna Therapeutics Granted First Broad siRNA Patent for a Gene Target in the United States

2006-11-18 17:40:49

Sirna Therapeutics Granted First Broad siRNA Patent for a Gene Target in the
United States
Monday April 3, 7:38 am ET
Patent Covers Any Chemically Modified siRNA Sequence Used Against the Targeted
Gene and Sets Precedent for Sirna Therapeutics' Substantial Target Patent
Portfolio in the U.S.
SAN FRANCISCO, April 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sirna Therapeutics, Inc.
(Nasdaq: RNAI - News) a leading RNAi therapeutics company, announced today that
the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will issue Sirna U.S.
Patent No. 7,022,828 on April 4, 2006. This is the first siRNA target patent
issued in the United States and sets an important precedent for Sirna's entire
target patent portfolio.
The patent covers any chemically modified siRNA targeting I Kappa B kinase-gamma
(IKK-gamma). Importantly, the claims of the patent are not limited to a specific
siRNA sequence but cover any siRNA sequence used against the gene. In addition,
the claims of this patent are not limited to a specific type of chemical
modification or structure but cover any chemical modification that can be made
to the siRNA. The patent covers blunt-ended siRNAs as well as those with one or
more nucleotide overhangs. IKK-gamma is an activator of the NF-kappaB pathway
(NF-kb), an important mediator in a host of diseases, such as asthma, arthritis,
cancer, chronic inflammation, neurodegenerative diseases and heart disease.
"We are gratified that the US Patent Office has issued the first broad siRNA
target patent to Sirna," said Bharat Chowrira, Ph.D., Vice President, Legal
Affairs and Chief Patent Counsel. "We have put tremendous effort into the
creation of a fully enabling target patent portfolio. The formation of this
target patent estate required the design, synthesis and evaluation of hundreds
of siRNAs per target. The issuance of this patent provides further validation of
our patent strategy and gives us confidence that our other patents covering over
250 targets will issue in a similar fashion."
Sirna is the first company to file enabling patents for over 250 important
mammalian disease targets including: alpha-synuclein (Parkinson's disease), BACE
(Alzheimer's disease), HBV (hepatitis B), HCV (hepatitis C), HD (Huntington's
disease), HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), HR (hairless gene), IL-4, IL-13,
IL-4 Receptors, IL-13 Receptors (asthma, respiratory diseases), influenza virus
(flu virus), NOGO & NOGO Receptors (spinal cord injury), p38 (inflammation),
PTP-1B (diabetes, obesity), retinoblastoma 1 (hearing loss), RSV (reparatory
syncytial virus) and VEGF (angiogenesis, AMD, diabetic retinopathy, cancer,
kidney disease).
"The issuance of this patent changes the IP landscape in the field of RNAi,"
stated Howard W. Robin, President and CEO of Sirna Therapeutics. "We believe
that the combination of our target patents with our patents in siRNA design,
chemistry, synthesis, and manufacturing gives Sirna Therapeutics a dominant
intellectual property estate in the field of RNAi-based therapeutics."
About Sirna Therapeutics
Sirna Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing
RNAi-based therapies for serious diseases and conditions, including age-related
macular degeneration (AMD), hepatitis B and C, dermatology, asthma, Huntington's
disease, diabetes and oncology. Sirna Therapeutics completed its Phase 1
clinical trial for Sirna-027 in AMD in 2005 and with its strategic partner,
Allergan, Inc., will move Sirna-027 into Phase 2 clinical trials in 2006. Sirna
has selected a clinical compound for hepatitis C virus, Sirna-034, which the
Company plans to bring into Phase 1 clinical trials by the end of 2006. Sirna
has established an exclusive multi-year strategic alliance with GlaxoSmithKline
for the development of siRNA compounds for the treatment of respiratory
diseases. Sirna has a leading intellectual property portfolio in RNAi covering
over 250 mammalian gene and viral targets and over 175 issued or pending patents
covering other major aspects of RNAi technology. More information on Sirna
Therapeutics is available on the Company's web site at http://www.sirna.com.
Safe Harbor Statement
Statements in this press release which are not strictly historical are
"forward-looking" statements which should be considered as subject to many risks
and uncertainties. For example, no single patent issuance predicts the
likelihood of the rest of the pending Sirna patent estate issuing. Patent
applications may not result in issued patents, and issued patents may not be
enforceable or could be invalidated. In addition, most drug candidates do not
become approved drugs. The development of Sirna-027 and Sirna-034 as well as
Sirna's other programs are still at a relatively early stage, are subject to
significant unknowns, and require significant funding. Other risks and
uncertainties include Sirna's early stage of development and short operating
history, Sirna's history and expectation of losses and need to raise capital,
Sirna's need to obtain clinical validation and regulatory approval for
Sirna-027, Sirna-034 and the company's other product candidates, any of which
could have negative results, Sirna's need to engage collaborators, Sirna's need
to obtain and protect intellectual property, and the risk of third-party patent
infringement claims. These and additional risk factors are identified in Sirna's
Securities and Exchange Commission filings, including the Forms 10-K and 10-Q
and in other SEC filings. Sirna undertakes no obligation to revise or update any
forward-looking statements in order to reflect events or circumstances that may
arise after the date of this release.

Re: Question from Gary

2006-11-18 02:16:08

Gary,
Very glad to see you doing so well. There was a study done in Italy
on spontaneous remission of chronic hep c infected folks and the
odd's are one in every 10,000 human years. So it you assume you can
live an average of 50 years with hep c then only one in 200 will
clear hep c without medical treatment.
My guess is the ones that clear spontaneously, clear soon after the
first year since the disease usually get's slowly worse.
There is a guy who failed two interferon mono treatments and then
cured himself with diet and herbs and vitamins. The guy wrote a book
which I mentioned to Afie. It's called "Triumph over hep c" by Lloyd
Wright. Apparently he's got files of other people who follow his
program who also spontaneously cleared.
I read the book and follow the program pretty well and do chemo
also. The program is designed to protect the liver and lower and
hopefully erradicate the virus. I figure it ups the odds of chemo
and the supplements protect my brain from further damage. Maybe too
late in my case but better late than never....
In your case there is probably no "rush" to get treated but you ought
to start protecting the liver and that book will tell you how.
If I were you I would be developing a treatment plan. First thing
would be to see what time frame you have to work with based on liver
damage. If the liver is still good and progression is real slow I'd
wait a few more years for the protese inhibitors which are likey to
be shorter and safer treatments. That was my plan but my liver
damage and health deteriorated a bit and I had to jump into chemo
quickly.
In my poinion the first thing is to find out what the current damage
is with a liver biopsy. blood tests hint at liver conditiion but are
not realy accurate.

Re: My Dad

2006-11-18 01:32:34

Lisa,
I think he's to mean and stubborn to act like he's sick. He has a
hard time talking, but when he's mad you can understand every word he
says. My Mom said that when he was in the hospital from the stroke,
that the only thing anyone could understand was when he was cussing
the nurses out. But, I guess the nurses told her that's normal in
stroke victims. They get mean, he was already that way. I feel sorry
for my Mom. The family there won't go visit them because he's mean to
my Mom. My daughter went to visit them in June. She said she couldn't
handle the way he was treating my Mom, so she took him by the
shoulders and shook him, "That's My Grandma, don't talk to her that
way." He was nice the rest of the time she was there. Tucson will be
interesting if they do show up. I never let him pull his stuff with
me. I don't know if he'll ever take responsibility for his actions,
he's an alcoholic in total denial. He blames everybody else for
everything. He gets so mad at me because I tell him, but he has
respect for me.
You hang in there, too. What you're going through has to be rough.

Tomorrow I go see the liver specialist,I'm still fighting with the
decision to go ahead and be treated again. As some of you know, I
had to stop my first tx after 12 weeks because of my bi-polar. It
caused me to be severly depressed. But I am on meds, 4 months now
and feeling less depressed. And my shrink says I'm stable enough to
start tx again if I choose. It's the hardest decision I've ever had
to make. Just knowing all the hell I'll be put through for 48 weeks.
And if I can't clear the virus, it will all be for naught.
I'm hoping I don't cause more medical problems related from the tx.
But the last few weeks have been hell, I'm so fatigued and joints
hurting. I need of some releif badly.
So wish me luck, and pray that I have the strenght to make the right
decision. By the way, where was everyone Sunday eve? I went to the

no one ever chat? Is there another chat rm?

Pakistan has bleak future in public health, warns report

2006-11-17 10:32:46

Pakistan has bleak future in public health, warns report
Islamabad: Nearly 10 percent of Pakistan's 155 million population carries the
deadly hepatitis virus, a group of medical professionals said Monday.
"Hepatitis B and C is a time bomb waiting to explode unless the government takes
drastic measures to control it," said the president of the Pakistan Medical
Association, Dr Omar Ayub, quoting the organisation's annual 2006 report.
The association represents medical practitioners and surgeons across Pakistan
and its warning is based on the number of patients seeking treatment against the
deadly virus.
"This (hepatitis) threat is 100 times more serious than AIDS because there has
been a sharp decline in the quality of life over the last few years, because of
poverty and inadequate health cover," Dr Ayub pointed out.
"The government must also launch awareness campaigns through the media and
significantly enhance the allocation for health in its annual budget," Ayub
added.
During fiscal 2005-06, the government allocated 4,128 million rupees (about $70
million) for the health sector, which is less than 2 percent of the total
spending.
In the largely poor population, only one doctor is available for 1,900 people
while there is one specialist for 14,500 persons.
The inadequate infrastructure also leaves big space for quacks who through
attractive advertisements, mostly in the vernacular Urdu language press,
offering cheap remedies for hepatitis B and C, cancer and kidney ailments.
The government has already drafted a law to discourage and punish quacks but has
not succeeded yet to put it before the legislature.
The association's report said that the life expectancy in Pakistan has declined
from 63 to 60 years.

FINDING YOUR NOTE

FINDING YOUR NOTE
--by Steve Goodier
A short story by William Saroyan is titled "The Man Whose Wife's Hair
Was Too Long But Whose Understanding of Music Was Too Short." If you
think the title strange, listen to this:
In the story, a husband plays the cello and never changes notes. He
just continues to repeat the same note without variation.
His wife is driven to distraction and finally protests: "Why do you
play the same note over and over and over again? Other cellists play
different notes."
"Other cellists play different notes," her husband replies, "because
they are trying to find the right one. I've found mine."
I'm thankful I don't live with a person like him. But he does touch
on a universal truth. There is something beautiful about finding your
note in life. We sometimes call it finding your
purpose or discovering what you were meant to do or be.
Philosopher James Allen advised, "Above all be of single aim; have a
legitimate and useful purpose, and devote yourself unreservedly to
it." It's about cause and effect. A life without
cause is a life without effect. Or put another way, a person not
devoted to a cause will have little effect on the world. It begins
with finding the right note.
I like the way Helen Keller said it: "Many persons have a wrong idea
of what constitutes true happiness. It is not attained through self-
gratification, but through fidelity to a worthy
purpose."
Are you finding your note?

Medical Test Showed Gesta Has Hepatitis

2006-11-16 01:08:36

Medical Test Showed Gesta Has Hepatitis
By Ronnie Nathanielsz
Well known boxing manager and promoter Rex "Wakee" Salud yesterday confirmed
that undefeated Mercito Gesta's WBC International featherweight title fight
against Jeffrey Mathebula was called off after the Filipino boxer failed the
official medical test Tuesday because he tested positive for hepatitis.
In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today
from Johannesburg, Salud said Gesta had " a very big chance of winning the
title" and he felt sorry for the young fighter who was clearly upset. Earlier,
Gesta's manager Terry Carter said "we don't know for sure what the problem was
but we understand it may be hepatitis B."
Initial reports from South Africa said Gesta had been given a clean bill of
health in a pre-medical on Monday but failed to pass the official medical test
the following day.
Carter said Gesta had been cleared by the GAB medical division in Cebu City last
January 17 and was allowed to leave for the title fight to be held at the
Wembley Arena on a card promoted by well-known South African promoter Branco
Milenkovic.
Milenkovic informed Mauro Betti of the WBC that "it is unfortunate but the South
African Medical Commission protects the welfare of the boxers."
Carter said he was prepared to "spend the money needed to have him (Gesta)
cured" because he believes the young featherweight "can win something big and is
worth spending money on."
Carter noted that in the past reigning OPBF bantamweight champion Malcolm
Tunacao also had a hepatitis problem and there were even attempts to claim that
Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao allegedly had hepatitis. Carter said it may be
a tactic to stop the fight because of fears that Gesta was too good for
Mathebula.
A South African website earlier reported that Milenkovic was worried about the
threat posed by Gesta and two other Filipino boxers Benedict Suico and Gabriel
Pumar who were matched against Branco Sports Production's WBC International
flyweight champion Mhikiza Myekeni and WBC International mini flyweight champion
Tshepo Lefele and decided to enter into a promotional agreement with the
managers of the Filipino fighters in case they win. Milenkovic said "yes I will
promote the WBC International title defenses if they win.

My Dad

2006-11-14 20:40:11

Hi scalihepc and Lisa.
My father had strokes. He was mean is whole healthy life to my brother and I.
There are so many things to say but I'm just not comfortable going deep into
it. He was real mean,,physically and mentally. Yet to everyone else he was a
sweet wonderful man that went out of his way to help them. I mean stuff like
paint their whole house!!
I do understand he was sick, mentally, and didn't know what to do.. Remember,
alot of people that were born in the 30's/40's....came from an era that mental
illness, including alcoholism, drug abuse and the sociopaths, schizophrenics,
etc.. were regularly submitted to treatments such as electrocuting...or cooking
the brain thinking this helped. I'm sure there are more horror stories. They
basically became Zombies!
I think this detered people from seeking help or even admitting there was a
problem, and a stigma like that is probably hard to shake. I know as a little
boy growing up..if spomeone said something like..the reason you never see her is
because she's got bats in her belfry..tetched in the head,, she's a looney,
She's completey zonkers and thats why she is always dirty and her house looks
bad.Stigma hatched!! Turns out..( this is the story of my liufe!! haha) I got a
job as a paper boy and she was MY cutomer!! I'd throw the paper and haul as!
THANK GOD she mailed in her paments!!Vicki,...when my dad got sick I rejoiced,
I'm not proud of that but the treatment we got from him, and our mother not
doing anything to protects us, (other than calling clergymen to make us take our
clothes off to see scars) made me that way. I was to young to fight it,mentally
or physically.
At age twenty six.. when he died... he was in Ohio and I was in Houston, I
hung up the phone and felt joy, happy that justice had finally been served, and
that MF SOB got what he deserved!!
I was wrong, Vickie. I'm not saying you are like me...and I know it's not easy
dealing with this situation.
The reason I've said all that is to say this...
When I visited one time at home..he...EXTREMELY uncharacteristically, said he
felt like I didn't love him.
First time EVER we talked about feelings, emotions, in my life!! Well there
was not much talking anyway.
I thought for the longest, and said Dad, the reason you feel that way is
because I don't.. I never have and never will. I shut myself down regarding
feelings and happiness when I was a little boy, and all I've ever wanted to do
was avoid you, hate you, and somehow stay alive.
He was crying hard, and I was mean!! I said it's too late for you to ask my
forgiveness. You are getting what you deserve.
Vicki...again, I was wrong. He didn't know he was sick and all my brother and
i knew is we were glad the other was getting beat! We cared for each other mind
you...but it was each 'man' for hinmself.
I apologize for rambling about my childhyood. A proffessional actually said to
my brother later in life.. we would have been better to kill them in t5heir
sleep, go to juvy, maybe placed in a foster home, and inherit a bunch of money
that was squanderd.
I wanted to go to aMilitary Academy. Citadel. WHOA!! would I be different HA!
I kinda' like me now though...
I'm sure have thiought this before, and I know it's not easy..almost
impossible, but if you haven't try to forgive your Dad. He probably doesn't
know how he affects others...
I'm pretty sure he doesn't even realize he is miserable. I'm not making
excuses for him, but... he could've been trying to self medicate all his driking
life with the booze.
That is not a form of "I wasn't responible for my alcoholism, it was something
from an outside force that caused me to drink!! Anything so it's noy the
afflicted's fault.
Some people don't think that holds water ...others do.
I do....I truly didn't realize it, but for 35 years I stayed drunk..trying to
deal with crap there is no way I could understand. Booze made me physically,
MENTALLY, feel good and not worry about reality. People actually liked me and
laughed at my stories and ANYWHERE< USA was my hometown...as long as there was a
bar.
GEEZZ LOUEEZZZ...
ENOUGH!!
I am so glad to be removed from all that.
Your Dad doesn't like himself probably, and whether he knows it or not.. he is
not happy being unhappy and making others miserable. Maybe he gjust doesn't know
what to do to fix it.
Sorry again... I yapped so much.
Sincerely,
Deliman
Lisa,
I think he's to mean and stubborn to act like he's sick. He has a
hard time talking, but when he's mad you can understand every word he
Vickie
