Hello Pam,
Thank you for your prayers and hugs to my Mom. She is less than 94
pounds and it is week to week. You need the hugs just as much, if not
more...SuperWoman! I couldn't get right back because my monitor went
this weekend. I am risking it and emailing at work till I can take
care of the problem.
You have a wonderful site here, the largest and I can see it grows
more and more each week. I wish I and others could use it to look for
others in our area, not just for those who can post. We use too, and
it's missed, my dear!

Chronic hepatitis in pediatric liver transplant patients

John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
Chronic hepatitis in pediatric liver transplant patients
A new study on the long-term outcome of children undergoing liver transplants
found that chronic hepatitis (CH) was common and that it was not detectible
using standard blood tests. The presence of autoantibodies (antibodies that
attack the body's own tissues) in these patients indicates that although not
fully understood, CH may be related to the immune response.
The results of this study appear in the May 2006 issue of Hepatology, the
official journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases
(AASLD). Published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Hepatology is available online
via Wiley InterScience at http://www.interscience.wiley.com/journal/hepatology.
Children normally undergo liver transplants for diseases that do not recur and
are potentially curable by the procedure. Although their long-term survival
rates are over 80 percent, little is known about tissue changes that occur over
time in these young patients. "An important question within the field of
paediatriac liver transplantation is whether children who have undergone
successful transplantation can expect a normal life expectancy or whether there
will be a gradual decline in liver function and eventual graft loss," the
authors write.
Led by Helen M. Evans of the Birmingham Children's Hospital in Birmingham,
United Kingdom, the study involved children who received liver transplants at
the hospital's Liver Unit between 1983 and 1996. Patients underwent standard
liver function tests, sonograms and liver biopsies at approximately 1, 5 and 10
years following transplant, and autoantibodies were measured at 5 and 10 years.
A total of 113 children had liver biopsies at the one year mark, 135 had
biopsies after 5 years, and 64 underwent biopsies at 10 years.
The results showed that there was a decrease over time in the proportion of
biopsies considered to be normal, with chronic hepatitis being the most common
abnormality (22 percent at 1 year, 43 percent at 5 years, 64 percent at 10
years). While liver function tests at 5 years were not significantly different
in children who had CH, the presence of autoantibodies was significantly higher
at 5 and 10 years in children with CH (72 percent and 80 percent respectively).
In addition, there was a strong association between the presence of CH and the
development of progressive fibrosis (the formation of scar-like tissue). The
authors note that "the finding of increasing fibrosis in children with chronic
hepatitis has not been reported before and has potentially important
implications for long term graft function."
The authors note that transient autoantibody production following transplant
sometimes occurs during episodes of rejection. In addition, late rejection may
be associated with tissue changes that are different to those normally seen in
acute rejection but more closely resemble those seen in chronic viral or
autoimmune hepatitis. "It is therefore possible that some cases of otherwise
unexplained chronic hepatitis in the liver allograft may represent a form of
late cellular rejection," the authors suggest.
The results of the present study indicate that important tissue abnormalities
can be detected in biopsies obtained from children who are clinically well and
have normal liver function tests, the authors state. "Screening for chronic
allograft hepatitis using liver biochemistry is therefore not possible and may
instead require regular measurement of autoantibodies," they conclude.

transplant and genotype

2008-02-27 22:37:40

Hi Bill..... from what I have read the genotype only matters when
considering treatment as some genotypes seem to have better success than
others..... but they all seem to progress at the same rate........ I would
try the transplant site at delphi at

hey bill

2008-02-27 15:56:44

hi bill, its late for me ive been on the computer all dang day, but wasnt sure
if you were asking me the ? or pam, either way, i just know that your right
about tx so early in the game, but they feel docs, i mean that early tx may have
better success rates, in long term clearance of virus, i think. as far as the
final outcome of all its not been shown to us in clear reports as to post tx
outcomes, 1 yr, 2 yrs, and 3 and on and on, would love to see scherring do that
study. (sorry kinda mad at them right now) we need the facts, cause this
interferon is very , extremely toxic to the body, and if that being the case,
why arent we getting info out to us from the drug manufacturers of long term
clearance of this virus, hummnnn got my curiosity,?? well enough complaining ,
just food for thought huh, but if iam to ever partake in interferon no matter
what shape it comes in , i want education and knowledge, going in to this in the
blind certainly doesnt help, we need facts, not just partial info, interferon
has been on the market for long x in different forms, id like to see how many
people have cleared tx, at the 5 yr point,. I ve hear for sure one, Naomi Judd i
do believe, but not sure. other than that hey maybe this would be a good site to
do a poll on clearence of the virus on those specifically whom have tolerated,
and finished tx., and would let all us know how long theyre viral loads, pcrs,
have been at zero, nite all sleep well talk soon. barb

many sites, what I
would like to find is some where where I can find some stats on the
need for transplantion by geno types of hep-c. In the past several
months since I have started surfing these hepatitis bboards I am
seeing so many people being put on treatment right after diagnosis
quite often without even a biopsy. What I am afraid is happening is
that a lot of docs are getting incentives from these drug company for
putting people on treatment. I may be completely out of line but in
all the stats I have seen only about 20 to 30 percent of us infected
ever have serious liver problems. I have spoken to several people
recently who know that they have been infected for over thirty years
and their boiopsy are only showing some mild inflamation but still
these docs are putting them on tx. I would appriciate any help that
you can give.

Re: [HepCingles2] Absence of specific symptoms in chronic hepatitis C

2008-02-27 00:33:42

Hi going thru my email here, and found this article to be rather confusing,????
nothing against you pam or figment, just wonder who they were doing stats on, of
course i took statisics in college, and there are many variables, including whom
or what population choosen to involve themselves in the study, age race,
lifestyles, and on and on. I just know speaking from my own retrospect; The
facts for me are more than fatigue, and leg what was it?. Now iam not trying to
be a smart as_ iam just trying to figure out this article, because after dealing
with this illness for quite some time, non treatable due to blood count probs.,
i just find it interesting that this was such a broad study, very inconclusive
info, and doesnt really tell me anything more than, that i know what Iam
experiencing isnt in my head, ie; depression, loss of appetite, severe joint
and bone pain, cognitive impairment, pain in my liver , and many other changes
ive seen go on in the last few years , including ability to do anything, needing
to put five blankets on me to stay warm, and on and on. I just feel this article
doesnt , and correct me if iam wrong, as i can be, do a whole lot of justice to
those suffering with very debilitating symptoms, that keep them from planning
more than the next 5 minutes of their day. the liver carries out around 500
different functions, and thats more than any other organ ,i do believe in the
human body, including it weighs more too than any other organ we have. I find
it interesting that this study was just not helping those of us whom are truely
suffering physically, mentally, emotionally, as we then are truely seen as
invisable or a invisable disease, (with what I think some feel a weak mind)
Sorry iam speaking out so strongly on this because you always have very good
informative postings, this is nothing about you, iam just sounding off, lol,:)
because i happen to be one of the population of hcvers that has had a 360 degree
turnaround in my life in the last few yrs, although iam at a lower stage, grade
2, 1b geno, but a 5 milllion viral load,. although non treatable due to low red
cells, large red cells , platelet probs , ect, I still dont think we have the
answers to all and it will take a long time, like hiv/aids, to get enough
regonition to have the public acknowlege this illness. Iam amazed how much its
kept quiet in the public eye,. Heck anyone whom can surpass 48 weeks of
interferon, (chemo) and still have life, well i think they should be awarded
with more than a Gold medal, how about a platinum medal, in the shape of a
heart, liver, and symbol of God given strength to have the will to continue each
week with the next shot. Now that is courage. Thanks for your posting, i love
challenges, and this just raised an ear to me, as Iam so curious as to whom they
polled in the survey , where, and why it seemed so generalized, ONCE again this
is just my view on it , and we all have them, Iam just a little more mentally
challenged or do i mentally challange things, because I see too many of my
friends whom are dealing with this illness, and not getting the financial help
needed, meds, or just someone to be with them from time to time, to show them;
yes we do care and love you. thanks and sorry this was so long, and again, this
is not a posting personalized to you , just of my own viewpoints of what were
dealing with here. thanks for listening, and again, I hope and pray for all of
us ; for a permant cure to a very life threatening illness. (ie; like a way to
stop the replication of this virus, not just put it dormant to lie in the body,
only to come back for some , like my dear friend , with a vengence. We all have
some level of hope for the interferon, and new changes, but i feel our answers
will be in far better modes of tx in the future, maybe stopping the virus from
replicating period. for good i hope:( nite all and again Iam just one of a many
whom deals with this illness, but am starting to lose dear people to the dragon,
or should i call it, the deadly black dragon,. love ya all nite, schess and
again pam, please keep posting your an inspiration to all, ty (Gosh I hope I
dont get the boot for this response, please just see that we are all human, and
need love and comfort, and understanding with this chronic fatal illness.) and i
want to committ my life to support and advocacy to this illness, because, this
isnt just about me, its about all whom suffer with it, those we've lost those
whom, are behind us just getting diagnosed. ok nite for now, barb

Symptoms
A DGReview of :"Absence of specific symptoms in chronic hepatitis C"
Journal of Gastroenterology
11/01/2002
By Anne MacLennan
People with chronic hepatitis C but with no severe complications do not show any
specific subjective physical symptoms, suggest doctors in Japan.
The severity of the disorder was not linked with patients' symptoms in this
study from the Isesaki Municipal Hospital, Isesaki, and the First Department of
Internal Medicine and Department of Public Health, Gunma University School of
Medicine, Maebashi.
This is a rare systematic examination of subjective symptoms in chronic
hepatitis C patients, although it has been believed the disease induces, for
example, fatigue or dullness in the legs.
Dr Motoki Iwasaki and colleagues used The Todai Health Index as the most
suitable questionnaire for measuring characteristic symptoms of this disease.
The index was developed as a symptom checklist for screening particular disease
or for health management.
Participants in the study were 60 patients with chronic hepatitis C who had no
severe complications and healthy randomly selected control subjects from Isesaki
City, Gunma.
The researchers found there was a significant difference in aggression between
patients and controls.
However, neither male nor female patients with chronic hepatitis C had any
characteristic subjective physical symptoms of the disease when compared with
the healthy controls.
Moreover, the severity of the disease was not linked with the patients' symptoms
once researchers took into account age and treatments.

Community Health Centers Urge Screening and Awareness as National Hepatitis Awareness Month Kicks Off

Community Health Centers Urge Screening and Awareness as National Hepatitis
Awareness Month Kicks Off
5/2/2006 2:21:00 PM
To: National Desk, Health Reporter
Contact: Robert Kidney, 301-347-0400
WASHINGTON, May 2 /U.S. Newswire/ -- More than 800 new cases of hepatitis C
(HCV) have been diagnosed in six Community Health Centers as part of a pilot
initiative which began less than one year ago. Community Health Centers across
the country are urging early screening, diagnosis and treatment of the disease
as National Hepatitis Awareness Month kicks off today.
There are approximately 30,000 cases of acute hepatitis C each year in the U.S.
Around 55 percent to 85 percent of people who are exposed to the virus become
chronically infected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
estimates that the number of deaths from end-stage liver disease in the U.S.
alone will reach 30,000 to 40,000 annually by the year 2010.
Hepatitis C is spread primarily by direct contact with blood of an HCV infected
person. The majority of new infections are acquired through intravenous drug
use. Hepatitis C testing is recommended for persons who ever injected illegal
drugs, received blood products or organs before 1992, were treated with
hemodialysis, have had a needlestick injury in a workplace setting, born to a
mother with hepatitis C, or have undiagnosed liver disease.
Many people are unaware of their infection because chronic hepatitis C is often
asymptomatic over many years, and for this reason, it is under-diagnosed.
Untreated, hepatitis C can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer, either of which
can be fatal. The CDC estimates that nearly 4 million Americans are infected
with the virus.
The National Association of Community Health Centers, Inc. (NACHC) piloted a
state-of-the-art clinical education and training program in July 2005 to better
prepare primary care clinicians at community health centers to diagnose and
treat Hepatitis C.
According to Thomas Curtin, MD, NACHC chief medical officer, "There is no
question that hepatitis C is prevalent within the community health center
patient populations. It is important that these centers play a vital role in
identifying at-risk patients and include liver wellness as part of the regimen.
Lifestyle changes, and treatment when indicated, can make a difference in the
progression of their liver disease."
NACHC has focused energy and resources, through a grant from Roche, to initiate
an HCV treatment program at six pilot sites in 2005 and currently is planning
for an additional 12 health centers to participate in 2006 - 2007.
"It's staggering, the number of cases we're seeing," says Paul Stabile, PA-C,
director of Clinical Care at William F. Ryan Community Health Center in New York
City, a participating health center in the NACHC HCV Initiative. "In order for
us to successfully combat this disease, people need to be screened for risk
factors, tested for the disease, diagnosed, educated and treated if applicable."
Linda Norris, the project manager for the NACHC HCV Initiative says, "While the
major focus of the NACHC HCV Initiative is on clinical education and training of
health center providers to keep the treatment of HCV at the patients' medical
homes, we are equally concerned with prevention, screening and awareness and are
taking steps to educate our patients and the public about this growing threat to
public health."
During the month of May, and all year long, Community Health Centers encourage
individuals who may be at risk, to get screened for Hepatitis C by their primary
care physician and if necessary, get treatment as soon as possible. For more
information visit http://www.nachc.com

Hello Mike
Sorry to hear of your despair but God has pointed out to you something very
important, your true love maybe is not as true as you would want to believe
since she did not even take the time to educate herself about your Ilness,He
has also helped you by allowing you the time to think about getting on the
computer to find a support group, rather than taking that time to off
yourself, in reality it is all about time now so look at it as a chance to
make the quality of each day here after count for something meaningful, God
will never burden you with more than you can handle, if he had to suffer, it
is only right that we should have to do the same and really believe that
suffering will make us wiser and hopefully put us in a better place when we
leave here. Take care and you are not alone.

Form On Blood Transfer Conforms With Medical Ethics

2008-02-23 22:23:32

May 02, 2006 17:06 PM
Form On Blood Transfer Conforms With Medical Ethics
PUTRAJAYA, May 2 (Bernama) -- The form to be signed by patients or their family
members if they agreed for blood transfer or transfer of blood components
conforms with the medical ethics.
Health Minister Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek said the form was meant to inform the
patient that there were risks in receiving blood such as being infected by HIV,
Hepatitis B, syphilis or other diseases.
"It is in line with the medical ethics code which requires every doctor to
inform the patient of every treatment procedure to be taken.
"This is regarded as International Best Practice in medical ethics so that
patients are aware what is happening and they have the right to accept or refuse
the treatment," he told reporters in his office here Tuesday.
He was referring to a local English newspaper report which alleged the ministry
was taking a lackadaisical attitude on the use of the form introduced last
January.
The form states that the patient understands that despite testing and screening
on the blood/blood components for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Syphilis,
there are still risks of developing the disease. The patient also made to
understand that unavoidable complications due to the transfusion may also occur.
"It is not a disclaimer, we just inform him of the risk involved in the
transfusion," he said.
He said the system was tested and acknowledged by the World Health Organisation
(WHO).
"Nearly 100 percent of our blood donors are volunteers and they have to fill in
a form describing their backgrounds and from the background we are able to tell
whether the donors are of high risks or not.
"All blood received undergoes test and the government spends RM200 on each unit
of blood to ensure it is free from disease," he said.
Chua said the ministry received 420,000 units of blood and only one percent is
rejected.
"It is not right to say that many people became infected after receiving blood
from hospitals," he said.

Liver Dialysis Appears Effective

2008-02-23 08:45:18

Medscape Medical News
Liver Dialysis Appears Effective for
Refractory Hepatic Encephalopathy
Neil Osterweil
Nov. 2, 2002 (Boston) - Patients with episodic type C hepatic
encephalopathy who fail to improve despite 24 hours of standard medical
therapy may be able to benefit from charcoal-based hemodiabsorption using a
liver dialysis unit (LDU), report researchers from Loma Linda University
Medical Center in California. Their poster was presented here on Saturday at
the 53rd Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver
Diseases.
In a prospective study of 18 patients with episodic hepatic encephalopathy
(EHE), 16 showed significant improvement in mental status within two days,
according to Donald J. Hillebrand, MD, associate professor of medicine,
chief of hepatology, and medical director of liver transplantation at Loma
Linda. "Charcoal-based hemodiabsorption utilizing LDU treatments are able to
safely, rapidly and effectively resolve EHE failing to respond to 24 hours
of appropriate medical management in patients with advanced cirrhosis,"
write Dr. Hillebrand and colleagues in their study abstract.
Up to one-third of patients with EHE exhibit altered mental status despite
five days of conventional medical therapy, and each episode of
encephalopathy in these patients carries a 10% to 30% risk for mortality,
the researchers note. In theory, liver dialysis could improve symptoms of
altered mental status by reducing serum toxins in severely cirrhotic
patients.
"Liver dialysis is a completely artificial device that utilizes charcoal to
selectively bind toxins that build up in the setting of liver failure," Dr.
Hillebrand told Medscape. "It combines some kidney dialysis-type mechanisms
with the liver dialysis. It uses a membrane to keep the charcoal solution
separate from the patient's blood, which improves the compatibility of the
machine."
Dr. Hillebrand and colleagues evaluated the efficacy of the treatment in 14
men and 4 women with a mean age of 50 years; the patients all had Child-Pugh
class C cirrhosis of the liver, and all had previous episodes of type C
hepatic encephalopathy. All but one of the 18 patients were receiving
recurrent or persistent therapy for EHE. The patients had a maximum of three
courses of liver dialysis, with each session lasting four to six hours.
Therapy was discontinued when patients either showed a predetermined
clinical response, went on to transplantation, or had deterioration in their
condition. Mental status was assessed with Conn's criteria (range, 0
[normal] to 4 [coma]).
The treatments appeared to be well tolerated, and mental status improved in
the majority of patients. Before treatment, 11 patients had a mental status
of grade 2, six had grade 3, and one patient had grade 4. In contrast,
posttherapy scores were grade 0 in one patient, grade 1 in 15 patients,
grade 2 in one patient, and grade 4 in one patient. There were no
significant improvements, however, in measures of liver function or Model
for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores.
Dr. Hillebrand told Medscape that although it's still unclear whether
charcoal-based hemodiabsoprtion using LDU can reduce viral burden in
patients with advanced hepatitis C infections, "the most important thing
we've learned is that detoxification works. If you can detoxify these
critically ill cirrhotic patients, you can improve the encephalopathy and
you can improve the organ failure. We're taking what we've learned from this
experience and are developing a new and what we think will be a better
machine."
Other indications they are considering for treatment with the LDU include
chronic liver failure, hepato-renal syndrome, liver failure after surgical
interventions such as cholecystectomy, and liver transplant recipients who
receive a marginal graft organ.
But liver dialysis, although promising, still needs to be run through its
paces, according to a physician who was not involved in the study. "There
has not been a lot of experience with it - it's experimental, but there's
been some research over the years into filtering the toxins that the liver
normally filters through a dialysis-like mechanism, similar to hemodialysis
for kidney failure, but I don't think we're to the point where we can say
that it is usable clinically," said Brian Boyle, MD, attending physician at
the New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Center and assistant
professor of medicine in the Department of International Medicine and
Infectious Diseases at Cornell University, in an interview with Medscape.

Implications of Schering-Plough's Exclusion of Blacks in Hepatitis C Drug Trial

2008-02-21 20:30:49

Drug Access | AP/San Jose Mercury News Examines Implications of
Schering-Plough's Exclusion of Blacks in Hepatitis C Drug Trial
[May 02, 2006]
The AP/San Jose Mercury News on Sunday examined the implications of
Schering-Plough's decision to exclude black people from the Phase II clinical
trial of its experimental hepatitis C therapy (Jordan, AP/San Jose Mercury News,
4/30). The Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project and the Hepatitis C Action
and Advocacy Coalition in March said the pharmaceutical company was
discriminating against black people by excluding them from the trial. The trial
includes 300 patients around the world and is seeking to establish dosage ranges
for the company's experimental protease inhibitor. According to the company, the
new treatment is for patients who are nonresponders to traditional combination
therapy of interferon and ribavirin. A "statistically significant" percentage of
black people do not respond to traditional hepatitis C treatments. According to
the two advocacy groups, the drug company is barring black patients -- whom
Schering-Plough classifies as "hard to treat" because they may not respond well
to traditional hepatitis drugs -- from participating in the trial in order to
have a more positive outcome. A spokesperson for Schering-Plough in April said
that blacks would be involved in another part of the Phase II trial, which will
study increased dosages (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 4/3). The controversy
"highlights a collision of scientific research and social realities in the
development of life-saving medicines," according to the AP/Mercury News.
"Somebody better wake up in Washington to come up with the next generation of
rules that tells how to go forward with testing drugs," Arthur Caplan, chair of
the department of medical ethics at the University of Pennsylvania and director
of its Center for Bioethics, said. Cecil Picket, head of research at
Schering-Plough, said that blacks were excluded from the early stages of the
trials for safety purposes, adding that Schering-Plough "didn't want to expose a
population [it] know[s] are poor responders to existing therapies to an
investigational new drug." According to William Gray, an official of the
Association of Clinical Research Professionals, Schering-Plough does not have to
"fulfill any social obligation very early in the testing of a new drug" (AP/San
Jose Mercury News, 4/30).

Coley Pharma Reveals Positive Results From Phase Ib Clinical Study Of Drug Actilon - Update

Coley Pharma Reveals Positive Results From Phase Ib Clinical Study Of Drug
Actilon - Update
Saturday, April 29, 2006; Posted: 10:59 AM
RTTNews) - Saturday morning, Coley Pharmaceutical Group Inc. (COLY | charts |
news | PowerRating), revealed positive results from the four-and twelve-week
five arm Phase Ib clinical study of its drug Actilon on treatment-refractory
patients infected with Hepatitis C virus or HCV, a blood borne infectious
disease of the liver.
The data was presented in a session at the European Association for the Study of
the Liver or EASL meeting in Vienna, Austria by John Hutchison, Medical Director
of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Research at the Duke Clinical Research
Institute and the lead investigator of the study.
The company said that Actilon acts through a specific class of targets called
Toll-like receptors or TLRs found in immune system cells by inducing a durable
and natural response to fight the disease
The Massachusetts-based company said that the data from the four-and twelve-week
clinical study of Actilon, alone and in combination with pegylated interferon
and/or ribavirin indicated greater rates of HCV RNA undetectability and improved
Rapid and Early Virological Responses compared with pegylated interferon and
ribavirin alone.
The Phase Ib clinical study enrolled 74 patients chronically infected with HCV.
The patients had previously received at least 24 weeks of treatment with
pegylated interferon and ribavirin, the standard of care. In the trials, the
patients were randomly assigned to one of the five groups, receiving Actilon
alone, Actilon with pegylated interferon, Actilon with ribavirin, Actilon with
pegylated interferon and ribavirin or pegylated interferon and ribavirin.
In the twelve week treatment period, the company said that 50% of the
treatment-refractory patients in the Actilon-pegylated interferon-ribavirin
study achieved undetectable levels of HCV RNA compared to 13% of the patients
administered pegylated interferon and ribavirin alone. Early Virological
Responses or EVR was achieved in 86% of the patients administered the
combination of Actilon, pegylated interferon and ribavirin compared to 60% of
the patients administered pegylated interferon and ribavirin alone.
In the four week treatment period, Coley Pharma said that 50% of the patients
administered Actilon with pegylated interferon and ribavirin achieved Rapid
Virological Response - RVR compared to 13% of the patients who were administered
pegylated interferon and ribavirin alone.
The company said that it believed the positive results at four weeks coupled
with the increased incidence of viral negativity at twelve weeks to be highly
encouraging as the previous results from similar studies of HCV patient
populations were reported as positive predictors for Sustained Virological
Responses or SVR continued viral clearance after ending the treatment.
Coley Pharma is currently conducting a randomized, controlled, 48-week Phase II
clinical study of Actilon in combination with pegylated interferon and ribavirin
on treatment-refractory patients.
COLY closed Friday's regular trading session at $15.99, up $0.48 or 3.09%.

Absence of specific symptoms in chronic hepatitis C

Uncomplicated Hepatitis C Shows No Symptoms

Larry,
I'm a little behind on my reading but, in case Pammie or someone else hasn't
explained yet...you can go to the home page of the website that you want to
post your pic at (cause you ARE going to post it in Other Groups,
too...Right, Hon? :-)...Look down the list on the left hand side of that
page til you see Photos and click on it. That will take you to the Photo
section. At the top of that page you will see Add Photo. Click on that.
You will need to have a pic of yourself on your computer that has either a
.jpg or .gif extension (if your pic has a different extension than that and
you don't know how to change it, I'd be happy to do it for you if you email
the pic to my personal addy) Anyway, if it does, just click on Browse. A
box will come up with the files and folders on your computer. Locate your
pic and double click on it. Add a Name and then click on Upload at the
bottom of the page.
If you have any problems with that, let me know, K? :-)
Love,
Nancy

Biopsy results

2008-02-19 01:16:44

Hi all,
I just talked to the Hep doctors office and they got my biopsy
results back today. The lady I talked to didn't know what this
meant, but she told me the following:
genotype 1b
alt 78 normal range 0-40
ast 47 normal range 0-47
stage 1 fibrosis
chronic hepC, mild activity, stage 2
I think this is good, but I don't know diddly. Any thoughts?

Thoughts to Ponder as 2006 Begins:
Number 10 - Life is sexually transmitted.
Number 9 - Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.
Number 8 - Men have two emotions: hungry and horny. If you see him without an
erection, make him a sandwich.
Number 7 - Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to
use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.
Number 6 - Some people are like a Slinky . . . not really good for anything, but
you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.
Number 5 - Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals
dying of nothing.
Number 4 - All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention
to criticism.
Number 3 - Why does a slight tax increase cost you two hundred dollars and a
substantial tax cut saves you thirty cents?
Number 2 - In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world
is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.
AND THE NUMBER 1 THOUGHT FOR 2005 - We know exactly where one cow with
mad-cow-disease is located among the millions and millions of cows in America
but we haven't got a clue as to where thousands of terrorists are located. Maybe
we should put the Department of Agriculture in charge of Homeland Security!

Thank you Johnny O,
I have many many many self-help books and yes, they have been my savior! There
are a couple that I want to get and I will check this one out also! Hope you
have a wonderful day! Mine will once again be on the battle field of the School
and my daughter, so prob won't be thinking much about addictions today! LOL
But life goes on and at least I am off Drugs, Alcohol and am taking time to
smell the roses and know what life truely is. So, when I am down, I do tend to
climb my way back up. Just differently than some. I tend to be MIA till I take
time to reflect and analyze the whole situation and focus on what I can do and
learn from it. I pick my battles as wisely as I can and HCV and Mental Health
along with Medical Care and SS are all very big ones for me. And I spend many
hours Advocating these issues. The computer IS a wonderful thing! Is it not??

Hi Mike,
I am Dana in PA. Don't know what part of the country you are in, but I can very
much tell you that you are in no way alone!! I think so many of us felt and
still feel or sometimes still feel that way! I am a wonderful example of that!!
But life does continue to go on. I was diagnosed in 97 and probably had for 20
years. Who know's for sure?? But sounds like maybe your loved one should get
much more education on HepC. That would be one thing. People react very
differently to this Virus. And uneducated people have a very difficult time
with it. And yes, if nothing else you should fight to live for yourself and
your son. You never know what the future holds, though I think allot of us can
say that we want to give up from time to time. All the groups that I am in on
HepC has truely been a blessing and a reminder, that I am NOT the only one in
the world having these feelings. And these groups have always been here for
each other. Their are many caring, loving, crazy, sane and insane people here.
Some very educated and some learning. You have a great mixture of people here
and many to talk to that can understand where you are coming from. So your
shock is normal and you will date again. No, it is not easy all the time. But
I have dated of and on for many years. I have been divorced for around 15 years
now. Some people I have dated understood and others not. And I do my best to
stay away from the people who do not want to take the time to educate themselves
on this disease. So feel free to talk to any of us here! We are hear for that!
We also joke around and take our minds off of it sometimes. But you will find
many friends here of which you will probably begin to feel like many of us.
"This group is a big part of our family"! So hang in there and share whatever
you are feeling, any questions you need to ask and jokes when you do not feel
like being serious!!..................Hugs to you................Dana in PA
P.S. VERY IMPORTANT! DEPRESSION VERY MUCH GOES WITH THIS. PLEASE CHECK WITH
YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT ANTIDEPRESSANTS OF SOME KIND.

They say Blondes have more fun, don't know about that, but I think they do get
noticed more and don't have to think as much if they don't want too!! Tehee!
Don't mean that to be bad, my mother is a natural blonde. But I was born with
bright red hair that darkened over the years and has now lightened to that
wonder, gray of which now we can't have that!! And the sunshine and SAD, you
ARE VERY correct. November and December are the cloudiest months here and the
have to be around the Holidays too!! So, if I could, I would be on that first

relate to this)! Kati is suspended and I demanded a huge meeting. Now I know
why she dissappeared! She never goes anywhere without calling me or leaving a
note! "Sometimes she omits what she is doing, but lets me know she is alive!!
She was in a manic state!! Seems one of the Wonderful world of teacher violated
her rights and wanted her to dp pushups in front of the class! Told my daughter
that she has lived with Bipolar for 25 years and she is not shit! And informed
the students that it was not as entertaining for Kati to be out of the class,
but much better without her!! I have a call in to the Special Ed Attorney! You
know how the school loves to tell what the student did but fails to inform you
of what the teacher did!! And it is a violation of the other students rights to
interview them on what happened, "so of course, you only get one side of the
story and "RECORDS DO JUST GET LOST"!! I have fricken had it!! They are going
to have to take me away!! Think I shall call this an open meeting and have the
newspaper involved!! They have always wanted to get into the school, but they
restrict them to ONLY THE GOOD things that go on here! Heaven forbid that we
don't get the city folf from NY and NJ to move to the nice quite peaceful
POCONO'S!!! Don, Your a teacher right? Can they make a student do pushups in

Follow Up on the Letter to Roche about Pegasys Pricing

2008-02-13 19:16:50

Forward this note as needed.
LETTER TO ROCHE ON PEGASYS PRICING AND THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP
Thank you to all those who were able to sign the letter to Roche on Pegasys
pricing and those who contributed suggestions on it. Thanks to Marty Delaney for
his hard work in drafting and sending it and to Ryan Cleary at Project Inform
for coordinating the signatures.
Marty Delaney sent the letter via Certified Mail (gets more attention that
way),to Abercrombie and Humer with all signers up to and including Saturday.
According to Marty all the Community advocates screamed about pricing in general
at Monday's meeting with Roche on their new AIDS Fusion inhibitor Fuzeon
(t-20. They referenced the Pegasys price as a reason for distrust of them over
future pricing.
THINGS YOU CAN DO:
1.We can still add more names and organizations after the fact ( Marty
referenced this is in a PS to the letter, namely that the sign-on list was just
the beginning, just those who were able to act quickly enough to sign-on in a
brief 3 day period. SEND SIGN-ONS to
tan@...
2.Send personal stories on pricing or access issues on Pegasys as well as to
keep pressuring more HCV and AIDS organizations to join the letter. Personal
stories, when delivered to the head honchos, can be very powerful. Roche needs
to see that the whole country is pissed at them. Send to tan@...
Ryan Cleary will keep the ball rolling and we'll update Roche with future data
once a week until things quiet down. IF YOu SENT YOUR NAME PREVIOUSELY
BE ASSURED IT WAS ADDED. The Letter WITHOUT the most recent signatures is copied
below for reference.
Thank you!

PRE-TRANSPLANT METHADONE AND NARCOTIC USE

2008-02-13 12:40:27

THE IMPACT OF PRE-TRANSPLANT METHADONE AND NARCOTIC USE ON TRANSPLANT CANDIDACY
AND
OUTCOMES-Abstract 84
Fredric D Gordon, Eric Richman, Alyson Nixon, JoAnne Pratt, Patricia A Conway,
Eric D Goldberg,
James J Pomposelli, Elizabeth A Pomfret, David Lewis, Lahey Clinic Medical
Center, Burlington, MA
Many liver transplant programs consider pre-transplant use of methadone and
other narcotics a contraindication to liver transplantation. Possible reasons
for under representation of this population on transplant waiting lists include
perceived or documented history of patient
non-compliance, recidivism, psychosocial instability, excessive resource
utilization, and prejudice. In addition, narcotic use may be an indicator of
addictive behavior that may prevent successful transplantation. Outcomes data is
therefore quite limited. The aim of this study is to analyze the outcome of
patients using narcotics evaluated for liver transplantation at a single
institution.
In this study 948 patients were evaluated for liver transplantation by our
program between 1995 and
2001. We do not exclude patients who are on chronic narcotics as potential liver
transplantation recipients. Once accepted for liver transplantation we require
patients to taper narcotic use, under the supervision of a physician, to the
lowest tolerable dose. Forty (4.2%) of these patients were on chronic (
months of daily use) narcotics at the time of the initial evaluation. Twenty-two
(55%) of these patients were on methadone with doses ranging from 35-150 mg per
day. Eighteen (45%) were
on non-methadone narcotics including oxycodone (n=10), morphine (n=4),
propoxyphene (n=3), and
hydromorphone (n=1). Waiting list status and post-liver transplantation survival
were analyzed.
The results showed that of the 40 subjects screened for liver transplantation,
12 (30%, 8 methadone, 4 non-methadone were rejected by the Transplant Screening
Committee, 8 (20%) were accepted but later inactivated, and 20 (50%) were
accepted and listed. Eleven of those accepted and listed (4 methadone, 7
non-methadone have undergone liver transplantation. Ten of the 11 liver
transplantation recipients (91%) remain alive with a survival ranging from 3-72
months. Six of the 10 patients
surviving liver transplantation recipients (60%, 3 methadone, 3 non-methadone
remain on stable doses
of narcotics. The reasons for acceptance and later inactivation include
uncontrolled narcotic use (n=3, 2 METH, 1 NON-METH), incomplete evaluation (n=3,
2 methadone, 1 non-methadone), too sick to transplant (n=1, non-methadone), and
arrest for narcotic possession with intent to distribute (n=1, methadone). Of
the 22 patients on methadone, 13 (59%) are not eligible for LT and of the 18
non-methadone patients, 7 (39%) are ineligible.
The authors of this study concluded:
Patients on chronic narcotics can be successfully transplanted. Many patients
using narcotics pre-liver transplantation are acceptable candidates for liver
transplantation. A higher proportion of patients on methadone will either be
rejected from candidacy or become ineligible for liver transplantation compared
to non-methadone narcotic users. The decision to list pre-liver transplantation
narcotic users must be individualized and standard acceptance criteria should be
applied.

Hepatitis C Treatment May Halve Injections

Hepatitis C Treatment May Halve Injections
HGS Sees Trials as Promising
By Michael Barbaro
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, November 5, 2002; Page E05
Early research indicates that Human Genome Sciences Inc.'s hepatitis C
treatment, a genetically modified version of a blockbuster drug already on the
market, may require fewer doses and stay in the bloodstream longer than the
treatments of its major competitors, the company said yesterday.
The results, culled from the first stages of human tests and released yesterday,
are by no means conclusive. But they appear to validate the Rockville company's
strategy of linking proteins to avoid their rapid breakdown in the blood, a
problem that has dogged drugmakers for years. The success of that technology
could hold important implications for the pharmaceutical industry as it turns to
protein-based drugs.
In a test involving 34 patients, researchers found that a single dose of
Albuferon-alpha, an experimental hepatitis C virus treatment, remains active in
the bloodstream for up to 28 days, more than twice the duration of the
leading treatments now on the market. The company contends the drug will require
once or twice monthly injections, which would cut the number of annual
injections for hepatitis C patients in half.
About 3 million Americans are infected with hepatitis C, which can lie dormant
for years before destroying the liver or triggering liver cancer.
Albuferon-alpha is one of three drugs in Human Genome Sciences' pipeline that
combine proteins intended as treatments with a second protein called albumin,
which is present in large quantities in human blood. The tests
released yesterday evaluated Albuferon-alpha's safety and activity in patients.
They tell researchers little about the drug's effectiveness in lowering
patients' viral load, said Vijay Balan, a liver specialist at the Mayo Clinic
who is working on the tests.

Schering AG receives positive CHMP opinion for EU approval of Betaferon for early use in MS patients

2008-02-13 07:55:14

Schering AG receives positive CHMP opinion for EU approval of Betaferon for
early use in MS patients
BERLIN, May 2, 2006-Schering AG, Germany (FSE: SCH, NYSE: SHR) announced today
that it has received a positive opinion from the Committee for Medicinal
Products for Human Use (CHMP) recommending that the European Commission grants
an extension of the indication for Betaferon® (interferon beta-1b) to add the
treatment of the first clinical event suggestive of multiple sclerosis (MS) to
its existing indications. A decision by the European Commission is expected by
summer 2006.
The CHMP decision is based on impressive results from the international BENEFIT*
study which showed that Betaferon® 250 mcg treatment in the early phase of the
disease reduced the risk of developing clinically definite MS (CDMS) by 50
percent compared with placebo.1,2 Furthermore, patients in the Betaferon® group
were two times better protected3 against developing MS as defined by the
McDonald diagnostic criteria.4 The BENEFIT study is the first study in such
patients with a high-dose, high-frequency interferon beta-1b.
"The results from the BENEFIT trial show that Betaferon consistently reduced the
risk of relapse when used in newly emerging MS, providing the best chance of
long-term efficacy to patients with multiple sclerosis and to people who are at
risk of developing MS," said Darlene Jody, MD, Head of Schering Group's
Specialized Therapeutics Global Business Unit. "The CHMP decision represents a
significant milestone, highlighting the importance of treating patients early on
- even before MS is clinically definite - to provide rapid, early control of
progression to clinically definite MS."
Betaferon® was first authorized in the European Union on November 30, 1995 and
is currently indicated for the treatment of patients with relapsing remitting MS
and two or more relapses within the last two years, and the treatment of
patients with secondary progressive MS with active disease, evidenced by
relapses. Schering AG, Germany also submitted the BENEFIT data to the US Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) to expand the label for Betaferon®, marketed as
Betaseron® in the US. An FDA decision is expected later in 2006.

Additional information
ABOUT BENEFIT
Patients with a first clinical demyelinating event suggestive of MS and typical
MRI findings received either 250 mcg of interferon beta-1b (Betaferon®) every
other day or placebo as a subcutaneous injection. Treatment continued for up to
24 months unless patients experienced a second attack and were diagnosed with
clinically definite MS. The two co-primary efficacy outcomes were time to CDMS,
based on a second clinical demyelinating event or an Expanded Disability Status
Scale (EDSS) progression
criteria. All study participants completing the double blind study were then
invited to participate in a separate open-label follow-up study with Betaferon®
which will prospectively assess the impact of such early treatment with
Betaferon® on the long-term course of the disease for a total observation time
of five years.
BENEFIT patients included those who had a first clinical demyelinating event
either monofocal (i.e. clinical evidence of a single lesion) or multifocal (i.e.
clinical evidence of more than one lesion). Inclusion of both patient groups is
important because this is representative for a "real life" patient population.
ABOUT BETAFERON
Betaferon®/Betaseron® was the first disease-modifying drug introduced for MS and
is a well-established treatment around the world. Betaferon® has the broadest
experience of any MS medication. In the US, Europe and Japan, Betaferon® has
been approved for all relapsing forms of MS. It is able to reduce the number of
MS episodes by one third, and the frequency of moderate to severe episodes by as
much as 50 percent. Sixteen years' follow up of people treated with Betaferon
has shown that it is safe and well tolerated.

We couldn't find red, yellow and green bell peppers so for color we added red,
yellow, and orange peppers which were jalapeno, habanero, and one other hot one
LOL But it WAS GOOD........ but a little goes a long way......... they were
quarter size peppers and we only used 1/2 of each one along with a red and green
bell pepper :-) Also we found the Spike seasoning at our local grocer :-)

Spiritual Healing for all patients

2008-02-12 23:16:46

I am a new member in this group.
I am a Reiki Healer and had been giving free healing at Distant Healing Network
- DHN for a long time. Now a days, I am working with a spiritual master who is
doing healing for any disease like Hepatitis, Cancer, Diabates and all other
physical and spiritual diseases. No one knows the root cause of any disease. In
spirituality, there are different outer affects which harm the people like
daemons or evil spirits. A person has cancer and no medicine is working on that
patient, it means he/she has spiritual disease. We can watch the patient by
closing the eyes in front of us and we are shown exact cause of disease and then
we do the spiritual opeation remotely for three days. After three days patients
bring their latest report and healing is immediately shown in the results. All
physical diseases are also cured through spiritual healings. We just need
complete name of patient and address; so spiritual client could reach(detect)
the patient.

Tricia,
Sorry took so long to reply! Yes, most doc seem to go from one extreme to the
other. I have had doc's give me whatever meds I want and Visa Versa! LOL
Klonopin works best for me too, just afraid of the addiction factor. I let all
my doc's know that I used to be an addict. And I really don't want to go back
there. Though it has been so long ago now I don't think I would! But withdraws
I get from just not taking the one Klonopin Frightens me enough! I can't
imagine the Oxycontin. Just the things I have heard and read about that, I just
would not even want to be introduced to it. My brother is and addict and an
alcoholic. He is on Morfine,"some of the time", but they told him they would
keep lowering it and then put him on Klonopin. I don't understand how they just
keep taking them of one addictive drug to another! None of that makes since to
me.
The anti-d's, Effexor, think it takes awhile to get in your system. It has less
sides than any other anti-d I have taken. I know allot of people don't like
Paxil, but that one I thought they should put in the water!! LOL I just had
really hot flashes with them and could not increase the dose when I was on
treatment. So they changed me. Oh well, from one pill to another! Seems to be
my life! And I thought I was done being an addict!! LMAO Now I just feel like
a legal one!! Lots of luck to ya,............Dana

effexor this week so not really feeling any difference. I had been on low dose
of elavil for years. It used to knock me out but I seem to be immune. We are
trying to decide between the effexor or doubling the elavil. I only take
Klonopin once or twice a day as needed and normally not every day as my doc will
not give me enough to actually take it twice a day. It helps my pain and sleep
the best so of course can't have it. I learned the hard way about jumping off
meds. A few months ago I decided to just quit oxycontin. I was flapping around
like a fish and it was not a pretty site. I seem to get doctors from one extreme
to the other and they won't give you the little xanax or klonopin that would
actually work. Go figure. Good luck, Tricia
