    Hey Del,
In the final stages of ESLD you get something called Ascites.
Ascites is swelling of the abdomen caused by retention of fluid
similar to Edema. The easy answer is that Ascites is above the waist
and Edema is below the waist. Severe Ascites makes you look like you
swallowed a basketball on top of a "beer gut". Sometimes the fluid
is drained. Edema is a collection of fluid in the lower extremities,
mainly the feet and lower legs.
As to the bleeding. Again, in the final stages of ESLD, you develop
something called Esophogeal Varices. Varices means "swelling of the
veins". Esophogeal Varices is a swelling of the veins in your
Esophogeas, or throat, leading to the stomach. Varices can also
occur in your Colon. In the final stages of ESLD these swollen veins
can burst and one bleeds to death.
I have watched someone die this way and it's not pretty.
There are a lot of other ancilliary maladies associated with ESLD.
One, for example, is bone loss in your jaws. The result is that your
teeth fall out. I've lost some teeth because of it and I'm going to
    lose another one soon.
Anything you would like to ask, please feel free and don't hesitate.
You can email me directly too.
